A Keep Android Open ticker under the navigation

A slim ticker under every page's navigation counts down to 1 January 2027, the date keepandroidopen.org gives for Android becoming a locked-down platform, and links to the campaign. It scrolls slowly and evenly, pauses, closes, and holds still for anyone who asks for reduced motion.

Sammy asked to support the Keep Android Open campaign with its countdown, as a scrolling ticker under the navigation that fits the site and stays calm to look at.

What it does

  • A second row under the navigation on every page reads “Keep Android Open: Android will become a locked-down platform in” followed by the time left, and links to keepandroidopen.org.
  • The countdown is in days and hours (hours and minutes on the last day), written in the page’s language and updated once a minute, with figures of equal width. There are no ticking seconds.
  • It scrolls slowly at one even speed, with the same spacing and separator between every repeat, and stops while the pointer is over it or a link in it has focus.
  • Pause stops it, and close hides it for 30 days. It disappears by itself after 1 January 2027.
  • Reduced motion, from the device or Display settings, shows one still line instead.
  • Nothing on the page moves when it appears: its height is part of the header from the first paint, and a closed ticker is hidden before the page is drawn. Without JavaScript it is not shown.
  • It follows the dark, light and high-contrast themes and reads in all seven published languages.

Under the hood

  • The ticker is written for this site. It does not load the campaign’s banner script, so no visitor’s browser contacts another site for it, and none of that script’s code (GPL-3.0) is used.
  • Closing it is remembered in this browser only, like the display settings.

Verification

  • Measured at 320 to 1440 pixels wide, moving and still, on English and translated pages: the ticker keeps one height, nothing shifts when it starts, no page text sits under it, and the phone menu opens below it.
