WHO I AM NOW

Creator, community builder, and puppy-minded human

I am Sammy, also known as Sammy The Puppy, Sammy The Foxxo, and AKASammyThePuppy.

I create content, build community-focused technology, spend a lot of time in VRChat, stream, experiment with music and web projects, build avatars, and somehow keep finding new ideas to chase.

But the things I make make more sense when you know a little about the person behind them. My path here has not been particularly straightforward.

Before the creator page

Before any of this

Before streaming, VRChat, Mello Zone, or development projects became part of my life, I had already spent years trying to find stability.

I came from a rough childhood and spent parts of my life moving through placements, difficult environments, and treatment while dealing with my mental health.

By February 2023, I had entered another placement. At that point, I was not thinking about building communities, becoming a creator, learning Unity, writing software, or running furry events. Most of the time I was simply trying to deal with whatever was immediately in front of me.

Then something unexpected happened.

A new world

Someone introduced me to something completely new

In May 2023, I met the friend who first introduced me to the furry fandom.

I barely understood what that meant. Fursonas were unfamiliar. VRChat was not part of my world. I had no idea how large the fandom was or how much existed around it: artists, characters, conventions, virtual worlds, creators, communities, friendships, games, and entire social spaces.

It started with one person showing me something new.

That person is still my friend today.

The date I remember

December 23, 2023

That was the day I was released from placement. It is also the date I personally consider the real beginning of my furry journey.

I started on Kik. I did not have a developed fursona. I did not really understand furry culture. I had no clue what VRChat had become. I was learning through conversations.

One person became several. Eventually I found BARQ, started meeting more people, and slowly became more comfortable being social.

Something that had originally been introduced to me as an unfamiliar interest started becoming part of my identity.

Curiosity became participation.Participation became belonging.

When the fandom became a place

Then I found VRChat

VRChat changed the scale of everything.

Suddenly the people I was meeting were not only usernames and profile pictures. People could actually stand together as characters they had imagined. Worlds became meeting places. Avatars became creative projects. A conversation could become a group photo, a stream, an event, a late-night hangout, or a friendship that continued long after everyone logged off.

Eventually I became interested in more than simply wearing avatars. I wanted to understand how they worked.

Unity, textures, materials, shaders, expressions, toggles, menus, animation controllers, and all the strange little pieces behind a finished avatar slowly became another creative language for me.

August 2024

Learning community from the inside

By August 2024, I was no longer only participating in furry communities. I became a moderator and station manager with Furry Refuge.

I worked on the radio side, helped expand networking chats, supported member engagement and growth, and learned how much invisible work sits behind a space that seems simple from the outside.

Moderation.Communication.Programming.Promotion.Conflict.Responsibility.

That chapter eventually ended during another difficult mental health period. From my perspective, the way my involvement ended felt unfair, particularly after how much of myself I had invested into the space.

It hurt. But losing that community did not make me stop caring about community. It made me start asking harder questions about how I would build one differently.

What would I build differently?

Trial, error, rebuild

Mello Zone was not the first attempt

I did not immediately know how to build the kind of community I wanted. I tried names that did not last, structures that became too complicated, and ideas that created activity for a week before disappearing.

I changed branding, moderation systems, onboarding, platforms, events, and even what I thought the point of the group should be.

Some versions worked. Some failed. Some needed to fail.

What finally started making sense

Eventually the pieces stopped feeling separate

Discord could be conversation. VRChat could be shared experience. Telegram could give people another social route. The website could preserve resources, information, culture, and guidance that should not disappear into chat history.

Streaming could create moments for people to gather around. Creator projects could give people things to discover and share. People did not need to participate everywhere to still belong to the same community.

Mello Zone gradually became less about replacing somewhere I had lost and more about building the kind of connected community I wanted to see exist.

Trial and error did not delay the project. Trial and error created it.

The creator started showing up too

Somewhere along the way, I became a creator too

Community building was only one branch of what was happening. None of these became separate versions of me. They became different ways I create.

Streaming

A way to share the strange, spontaneous moments I was already living in VRChat and gaming.

Avatars

A place where technology, identity, character design, and VRChat all collide.

Development

Solving my own problems gradually turned into tools, websites, integrations, and systems other people can use.

Music

A place to experiment without needing every project to have a practical reason to exist.

I am not a streamer who occasionally codes, or a developer who happens to be furry. They are different ways I create.

The recurring question

Why I build things

A lot of my projects begin with a surprisingly dangerous sentence:

“Why am I doing this manually?”

That question has turned into websites, integrations, Discord tooling, streaming utilities, SEO software, Unity projects, automation, and other experiments that were originally supposed to be small.

I enjoy discovering how something works, taking it apart, and realizing I could probably build my own version. Sometimes I also discover three days later that I absolutely underestimated what I was getting into.

What community means to me now

A member count is not the same thing as a community

I care more about whether somebody joins and eventually starts recognizing names, whether a creator feels comfortable sharing something unfinished, and whether someone new can ask a basic question without being made to feel stupid.

I care whether somebody can disappear for a few weeks and come back without feeling like they failed a participation requirement, whether friendships form without staff manufacturing every interaction, and whether people understand the boundaries of the space before something goes wrong.

That does not mean pretending communities are perfect. They require trust, expectations, safety, consent, accountability, moderation, and a willingness to admit when something is not working.

What changed most

Greatness is never a finished product.

Neither is healing. Neither is community. Neither is creative work.

You notice what is not working. You change it.Sometimes you make it worse. You learn. You try again.

Still in progress

Today I am still streaming, building avatars, writing software, experimenting with music, creating content, growing Mello Zone, working in VRChat, and discovering new things that somehow become projects.

There are still unfinished ideas everywhere. There are still mistakes. There are still difficult days. There is also considerably more possibility than I could see when this story began.

I do not know exactly what all of this becomes several years from now. I am okay with that. Some of the most important parts of my life began before I understood what they were becoming.

No final chapter

The story is still being written.

Remember you deserve to exist. #KeepItMello
